BIANCOLILLA
Also known as: BIANCUZZA, RIZZA, BIANCOLIDDA, BIANCHETTA Area of origin: SICILY TREE: A plant of great vigor with a dense crown and expansive habit. The leaves are medium-small, lanceolate and dark green. FRUIT: An oil cultivar with symmetrical oval-conical fruit and medium weight (2.5-3.0g). At harvest the olives are distinctive red-violet color and yield a fair amount of oil (15-18%) which is very aromatic and of excellent quality. AGRONOMY: A partly self incompatible variety that is greatly aided in setting fruit by cross pollination. A variety of elevated production, but with a tendency towards alternate bearing. Pollinators: Zaituna, Moresca, Nocellara Etrea, Tonda Iblea, Ogliarola Messinese. Good resistance to cold, late frosts and to peacock spot. COMMENTS: The ideal condition for this variety is high southern hills if the climate and soil are good. Biancolilla is a good pollinator for other oil varieties. |
