JEFFERSON OLIVE
Area of origin: CUMBERLAND ISLAND, USA. These trees were propagated from trees grown from cuttings by a nursery west of Atlanta, Georgia. The original trees date from Jefferson's time. Story has it that Nathaniel Green, an American patriot, and then owner of Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia, enlisted the aid of Thomas Jefferson to sell the island's oak to the French and replant with Olives. No information is available as to whether olives were even produced and the exact variety is not known. Fifteen of the newly propagated trees were returned to the island and replanted. |
